2600 Golf Course Drive
San Diego Balboa Park Municipal Golf Course

San DiegoCA 92102

Finally. We made it. This place has been on the radar for quite some time. I am reluctant to let this cat out of the bag but here goes. This is a jewel in San Diego’s culinary crown. This is the type of place that inspired this blog to form in the first place. The food is not bad. Add in the view, prices and service and there’s no room to complain. So don’t.

The burger and fries is a solid choice. Turkey and grilled cheese sandwiches are in effect. Fresh soup of the day will set you back $2.50. I have personally not had the pleasure of feasting on their breakfast menu but  gospel has approved the menu fit for consumption. An 8oz draught will set you back…wait for it…..$2.

If you can find it, go. Now.

*Update*
I have dipped into the breakfast menu.  I had the gravy-covered chicken fried steak (which btw is
not
chicken!!), eggs (over easy), O’Brien potatoes and wheat toast. It was as good as it sounds. I didn’t eat for the rest of the day, but it was good.

Counterpoint

Counterpoint
Neighborhood: Golden Hill
830 25th St

(619) 564-6722

Here we go again with the new spots. And what a delightful new spot it is too. Open until midnight, Counterpoint is a pleasant addition to the Golden Hill Culinary scene. They just opened so stay tuned for website and menu links.

In the meantime cruise in there admire the clean design and start with the artisan grilled cheese sliders. When they say small, they mean small. What they don’t say is delicious, which is what they and their accompanying salad are. Appetizers, sandwiches (our favorite), salads, beer and wine are on deck. We are looking forward to what this joint will bring. Go make it happen.

Anakin’s Fruteria & Deli

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

2991 Broadway ave
San Diego, CA 92102
(619) 255-9126

This venue has housed a number of different business ventures. Most recently known as Coffeehouse of Broadway, This building now houses Anakin’s fruteria & Deli and Barber shop.

I finally cruised in to grab some tortas for my crew and I. I went with the turkey. These things are straight-up huge. They come standard with avocado and cheese which is nice. Also available is Ham, Roast Beef, Tuna and Lomo. I’ve been back several times. No bullshit.

I tasted a Banana/Strawberry smoothie which was excellent. On a later visit i tried the Mango smoothie which i did not like quite as much but was still competent. Gospel had the $1.50 TJ hot dog. Whoa. Bacon, Nacho Cheese, Mustard, Ketchup, Tomato and Jalapenos. $1.50. If you do dogs, do this one.

I almost didn’t want to blog this place. This is the new spot.

Georginos

Neighborhood: Golden Hill

San Diego, CA 92102

This spot used to be a pizza place back in the day. I had been in to get a sandwich soon after they became Giorginos but had not been back in since then until a few days ago. I kind of remember why.
I split a chicken cheesesteak with Gospel1. While the service was totally cool, the sandwich I was not feeling too much. While cheesesteaks are rarely cheap I felt this was a bit spendy for what we got. The little bit of chicken and onions that we did manage to get were shredded. Shredded. I’m going to have to try again and maybe a few other things before writing them off. The menu has some interesting choices, especially if you like beef and pork which i don’t eat much of.

In their defense, the service was good. They noticed we were splitting one sandwich and fries and split the order into two baskets for us. They are also down with the Amoroso therefore worth a trip no matter what I type.

Los Reyes

Neighborhood: Golden Hil
2496 Broadway at 25th
San Diego, CA 92102
(619) 231-0716

Look, they wouldn’t call themselves ‘The Kingdom of the Mexican Food’ for just any reason. I used to go here strictly for the 3 sope special (sin crema). It has since been removed from the menu. I may have to bring that up next time I’m in there. You can, however, still get a solid Fruit Salad or Pastel de Tres Leches.

On my most recent visit I had to run through the repetoire to find what would hopefully become a new favorite or force me to never come back to this joint ever again. Luckily, for everyone involved, I arrived at the former. Chicken Fajita Burrito. HOT. Literally and figuratively. The grilled peppers and onions nearly singed me.

To be honest this visit was months back. I suppose I should have a more recent take on the matter. One day I’m sure i’ll feel the need for some standard SD taco shop fare while in the Golden Hill vicinity. Don’t get it twisted what they do here they do well, just don’t expect any of the more exotic SD taco shop offerings on their menu.
